According to Inquirer.net, this new deal is part of the LRT-1 Public Private Partnership project which extends the Manila train line up to Bacoor, Cavite. The new line is expected to be completed by 2021 while the new cars will be supplied by 2020 to 2022. This will not only double the number of working trains in the country but also increases the passenger capacity to 1,388.
"Through the project, JICA aims to support the Philippines in accommodating growing demand for quality mass transport and job opportunities,” said Chief Representative of JICA Philippines Office Susumu Ito.
The aim of the project is to provide better service to the growing demand for better public transportation in the country. The entire project has an estimated value of 64.9 billion pesos which includes the 19.6 billion pesos for the new trains. This new project extends Philippine's train line to 11.7 kilometers.
Meanwhile, Japan is also funding the planned Mega Manila Subway in the country. The whole project costs 360 billion pesos that will connect the northern provinces to Philippine's capital, Metro Manila. Wikipedia states this project is a part of the loan agreement between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Duterte. If this is completed, the first phase will connect Mindanao Avenue to Ninoy Aquino Internation Airport.
Should these projects push through, Philippines is expected to have better public transportation, especially in Metro Manila. It has been reported that Manila has one of the worst traffic in the whole world, wasting the time and money of every Filipino.
