57 Filipino teachers have been hired by The Clark County School District in Nevada, the United States to teach as SPEd teachers this year. The base salary of the new teachers is USD 40,900 or approximately 2 million Pesos each year.
Since 2017, Nevada has been hiring teachers from all over the Philippines to work as SPEd teachers in the US. Back in 2017, a total of 84 teachers were hired while 105 teachers started work in 2018. This is due to the shortage of teachers in the US so Nevada opened the position for candidates abroad, including the Philippines.
Preparations and Training for Hired Teachers
According to the newly hired teachers, their applications were accepted last January and they had six months to prepare. This includes lots of paperwork and licenses that wasn't easy but was worth it in the end when they got to start work abroad. They also had to undergo different trainings including classroom management, individualized planning for students with special needs and an accent reduction program.
One of the teachers who was hired by Nevada, said there is a huge difference in pay and benefits so they are really happy with their new job. Another teacher said they also feel the support of the people around them so they are excited for the start of the new school year in Nevada.
Teachers who were hired by The Clark County School District and signs to work for 3 years will be provided with J1 Visas. They will also have the option to renew their contract and stay for an additional 2 years.
