According to a report published by ABS CBN News, Orlando Ashford, President of HAL, said they will be launching a new cruise ship which will be called Nieuw Statendam this year and they will need a total of 1,300 staff. This means about 400 of the new hires will be reserved for Filipinos!
The new cruise ship is said to be the biggest one for HAL and will be able to accommodate up to 2,666 guests. This means a ratio of 2 guests for every one employee. At the moment, the company has two schools in the Philippines where they are searching for potential employees. One is in Intramuros and the other in Antipolo. Students of this school are trained for almost every work available for the cruise including culinary work, refrigeration, food service, front office work, plumbing and so much more.

Although there has been a decrease in hiring Filipino workers in the cruise industry, Ashford said he doesn't see HAL reducing their Filipino hires. He said Filipinos are always energetic, smart and have a great sense of humor that really connects well with their guest.
